BEAUTIFUL LOSER BOB SEGER

Beautiful Losers is our attempt to understand the 21st century in the context of our academic background as well as in the context of the wider-world that we now live in. We hope to find like-minded thinkers. People who are interested in the world and miss the excitement of participating in an excellent seminar discussion. Beautiful Losers has entered the canon of Canadian literature, and has been given much credit for having introduced postmodern literature to Canadian fiction. Beautiful Losers was the inspiration for the song Let's Be Other People by the English band The Wonderstuff on their Hup_(album). One of the best-known experimental novels of the s, Beautiful Losers is Cohen’ s most defiant and uninhibited work. The novel centres upon the hapless members of a love triangle united by their sexual obsessions and by their fascination with Catherine Tekakwitha, the 17th-century Mohawk saint. Directed by Aaron Rose, Joshua Leonard. With Julian Bennett Holmes, Thomas Campbell, Shepard Fairey, Jo Jackson. This documentary follows the lives and careers of a collective group of Do-it-yourself artists and designers who inadvertently affected the art world. Like the art scene it documents, Beautiful Losers is chaotic, anarchic, rambling and populated by charismatic freaks with statement T-shirts, complicated haircuts and impossibly rare trainers.

This political turmoil found its way into Cohen's work when he returned to Hydra. Cohen practised fasting during the composition of the novel, believing that it helped focus his creativity and spirituality.

Following its completion, Cohen broke down, collapsing from sunstroke and amphetamine consumption.

He had hallucinations, and had withered to pounds after going without food for ten days. Cohen published another book of poetry, Parasites of Heaven , in , [31] but by then it became clear to Cohen that he would be unable to make a living as a writer.

He shifted focus to music, particularly after becoming interested in Bob Dylan in That year, he decided to devote himself seriously to a singing career.

In March , Cohen told Jack McClelland , president of Canadian publishing house McClelland and Stewart , [a] that he would finish the novel in a month.

He stated that it would be a success if it escaped the censors, and asked for a cash advance, as he was in need of money.

When he completed it three weeks later, he declared that he had "written the Bhagavad Gita of ". He claimed he had figured out how to "write a novel in three weeks", and that he would manage four more in Cohen pondered a number of titles for the book.

Further, he insisted on no quotations from critics on the jacket. Publication was somewhat complicated when Cohen lost a carbon copy of the original manuscript to the wind.

He was able to continue with revisions after having his New York agent send him another carbon copy. The pre-publication orders of 3, copies were more than expected.

Before publication, a number of film producers were eying the book, such as Otto Preminger , Ulu Grosbard , Alexander Cohen and the MCA Group.

McClelland realized that censorship would be a problem in Canada, and tried to soften the blow with advance publicity via advance copies.

The responses from the readers of the advance copies were too negative for him to use, however. A gala lunch was thrown a month in advance of the book's release, and about four hundred of the top names in the Canadian arts world appeared there.

Posters had Cohen in a turtleneck and jacket in the hopes that such a sober pose would offset the anticipated scandal. It included typographical extras not included in future editions, such as comic book captions, a Charles Axis advertisement, a radio transcript of Gavin and the Goddesses , and a Greek-English phrase book.

Distribution was restricted, with Simpson's and W. Smith refusing to carry the book, despite McClelland's reassurances to W.

Smith that "most of the people interested in pornography would not begin to understand either Cohen's purpose or his accomplishment".

Cohen thought it too high, but McClelland explained it was necessary to offset the publication costs and extensive promotion.

He accused Cohen of being "unwilling to put [him]self out" in the way of promotion, and urged him to do more television and radio interviews.

Cohen made use of a number of texts when researching and writing Beautiful Losers : [41]. He would meet with other writers at the Hydra colony to discuss works such as the Book of Revelation , the I Ching , The Secret of the Golden Flower and The Tibetan Book of the Dead.

Cohen brought works by Martin Buber and Gershom Sholem to these meetings. Beautiful Losers is not written in a linear, coherent fashion. Key scenes repeat themselves, and there is no timeline the reader can follow.

Initial sales were poor. It sold better in the US than in Canada, but did not see significant sales until after Cohen achieved success as a singer-songwriter.

At the same time it is probably the most interesting Canadian book of the year". Critics were less shocked by the breaking of taboos than the general public was.

Instead, they objected to the novel's complexity of allusion and representation, and the demands it put on the reader due to its incoherence and indeterminacy.

It would take another generation of postmodern Canadian literature before Beautiful Losers would breach the canon.

In , the CBC called Beautiful Losers "one of the most radical and extraordinary works of fiction ever published in Canada", and quoted a critic from the Boston Globe who positively compared the work with the fiction of James Joyce.

However, they also quoted from the previously mentioned negative review from the critic Robert Fulford. In , Desmond Pacey called Beautiful Losers "the most intricate, erudite and fascinating Canadian novel ever written".

In his monograph on Cohen, Michael Ondaatje called it "the most vivid, fascinating and brave modern novel" he had read.

The film was preceded by a published art collection titled Beautiful Losers. The publication of the book was to complement and commemorate the traveling museum exhibition, which itself was one of the settings and subjects for the film.

The exhibit is a large scale group exhibition featuring the artists from the film as well as others, and which continues to tour around the world.

The exhibition was conceived and produced by Iconoclast, where founders Christian Strike and Aaron Rose also acted as co-curators of the exhibition, and as the editors and publishers of the book.

I refuse to sentence Leonard Cohen to the boneyard of sentiment. He has too much to offer for that. The good great ; "I do not think that a saint dissolves the chaos even for himself, for there is something arrogant and warlike in the notion of a man setting the universe in order.

He rides the drifts like an escaped ski. His course is a caress of the hill. His track is a drawing of the snow in a moment of its particular arrangement with wind and rock.

Some are of the opinion that the wart will vanish with time. Some are reluctant to consider the wart at all.

There are even those who deny the existence of warts. Beautiful Losers is no longer relevant. It is, at best, a tertiary influence on today's best literature.

I cannot recommend it unless you are as curious as me about the song writer Leonard Cohen. Even then, you will get no closer to his genius after completing this book.

My completely random musings on Beautiful Losers , not to be mistaken for my otherwise musings which tend to actually have some through line.

Humans are at their core all animalistic. It is society which shapes us, lacquers us, and tells us to hide those natures like a dirty little secret.

This book is completely unapologetically sensual. Completely uninhibited which, amusingly, is probably why I like it so much. There is way too many microscopic sexual definitions out there.

Why is it that we, a My completely random musings on Beautiful Losers , not to be mistaken for my otherwise musings which tend to actually have some through line.

Why is it that we, as humans, have this asinine need to categorize sexuality? Why do we have to be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, etc.

Classification of sex or sexuality is such a ridiculous thing. I have never been so fascinated with the sensuality and eroticism of a book before, it hasn't happened.

Now, I will say that I have also never been sexuality attracted to a year-old girl nor have I had any cravings for many of the desires and cravings thought, and acted upon, in this book.

That being said, the coveting of innocence is a historical absolute. There are so many examples of it in our written history that I will not even begin to list them here.

Personally, I have never experienced this particular desire, nor do I necessarily agree with it, but it is in fact the most highly paid for commodity of humanity's history.

Dowries, diamond rings, etc. I think, oft times that people forget the basis of desire itself, it is by definition illogical. Desires, urges, cravings, these things are not propagated by intellect.

They are the animal within us. As a 13 year-old I was much more interested in catching frogs or playing on the monkey bars than sex or my own sexuality.

I was still trying to figure out why kissing was such a good idea when all it seemed to me was an awkward slimy mess, but I digress. I enjoyed the way sensuality was written as a bodily experience not merely as an organ experience.

This happens too frequently in today's society, we forget that eroticism is about more than coming or achieving orgasm by the way, I think that term is completely stupid, I have no idea why I'm using it here.

Here's your ribbon, sir, you achieved orgasm! In this way an ankle or wrist can be a very sensual thing. I realize now I have yammered on at length about sexuality and sensuality when truthfully it really isn't all the book is about.

It is about being uninhibited, experiencing life and the living of it. It is spiritual and sexual and at times rather harshly disturbing. This isn't the great American novel, I don't even fully understand why I loved it like I did.

Perhaps, because it is like a bird with a broken wing: not more lovely than the other birds but no less astonishing for it's brokenness.

It's raw, it's unchartered, it's messy, it's insane and it's beautiful. Random thoughts, I warned you. Future readers note: If the idea of uninhibited sexuality, vulgar urges or animalistic desires disturbs you on any level, this is NOT the book for you.

Apr 19, Debs rated it it was amazing Shelves: canadian , , favorites. I don't know what the hell to say about this book. So I'll talk about the feelings.

Sometimes, I had to shut it because it was too nauseating. Sometimes I thought it was delicious, and disgusting. Sometimes my thoughts ran in parallel with it.

At one point I declared that it was the best book in all the world because it just felt I'll try to break it down. This was by far the strangest and most uninhibited thing that I have ever read.

I felt as though I had never read a book before. C I don't know what the hell to say about this book. Cohen wrote it when he was severely, severely depressed.

Severely depressed. And I'll say it again. He was severely depressed. There's no point in trying to understand the ins and outs of the whole thing, because I just don't think you're supposed to.

I'll copy-paste what it says on the back anyway By turns vulgar, rhapsodic, and viciously witty, Beautiful Losers explores each character's attainment of a state of self-abandonment, in which the sensualist cannot be distinguished from the saint.

There's pretty much no in between. For her it was more of a hate, she is glad she read it but she has no desire to ever again. For me it was a love.

I think any strong reaction is a good one; is book is provocative beyond anything I've ever seen or read. But not for the faint of heart.

I didn't get this novel. For most of the time I spent reading it the meaning of the text evaded me. Cohen is doing a lot of things here, and they are very interesting and postmodern—sacred and profane chafing against one another—but I didn't always feel secure in this reading.

I think this is productive, not negative. I felt extremely unsettled throughout, at times repulsed and horrified, but was very interested in what Cohen was saying about Canada and its history.

I think this book requires a I didn't get this novel. I think this book requires a reread. I didn't love reading it, but it is doing interesting things, and I'm interested in unpacking the sections that made me feel uncomfortable or confused.
